SEN. SCHULTHEIS' LETTER TO STATE UNIVERSITY PRESIDENTS

DENVER -- Sen. Dave Schultheis, R-Colorado Springs, penned a letter to University Presidents in Colorado inviting them to discuss Senate Bill 08-045, which addresses the issue of intellectual diversity in higher education.

Students at Colorados institutions of higher learning deserve an intellectual environment that is receptive to all political ideologies, Schultheis said.

His letter praises the University of Colorados Board of Regents and Faculty Council for approving the American Council of Educations Statement on Academic Rights, and Responsibilities.

Schultheis wants to continue the progress made by CUs President Brown by engaging other universities in consideration of this issue. He hopes to attend faculty governance meetings to discuss SB 08-045 and facilitate a dialogue before it is heard in committee.

The bill defines the role of higher education as a forum for an open discussion of many perspectives. Schultheis wants students and parents to know that Colorado is committed to an intellectual balance of a variety of viewpoints
