"Children should be educated and instructed in the principles of freedom." -- John Adams (Defense of the Constitution, 1787)Second AmendmentHome / ISSUESPolicy PositionPermits should not be necessary for gun ownership, nor should government require payment to obtain such permits since the 2nd Amendment guarantees this individual freedom. The purpose of the 2nd Amendment was to ensure the civilian his/her ability to maintain checks on the government. Ownership of firearms, being a guaranteed right, must not be viewed as a privilege by the Government. The negative consequence of diminishing this right is that it provides greater authority over its citizens by both federal and state government. Dictatorships impose control over firearms; a citizenry that is not armed cannot effectively maintain or advance freedom and liberty over its government. Our founders considered the freedom to bear arms as fundamental to the protection of liberty. Secondarily, the ownership of firearms is essential to the protection and defense of our families and property. When considering legislation, one must always err on the side of liberty for law-abiding citizens, and yet impose severe consequences on those who break the law and abuse their right through the misuse of firearms.
