Policy Position

Doctors and health service organizations operate under tight financial constraints and many hospitals, clinics and nursing homes have closed because of the strain of the uninsured. Additionally the individual payer incurs increased fees to offset free services to indigents.

One key to more affordable health care would be to significantly reduce government mandates. Individual premiums would become more affordable if costly administrative fees and regulations were done away with and motivation to reduce wasteful spending were to be encouraged. This would allow for more affordable insurance plans, reduced payments for cash and encourage medical savings accounts.

I am opposed to any further moves that would foster a government-run, universal health care system. Not only would it significantly foster a "redistribution of wealth" mentality among citizens, but as a member of Colorado's State Audit Committee for several years, I have observed major waste in almost every government-run program; a universal health care system would be no different. I also do not support requiring everyone to have medical insurance. While certainly not perfect, a free-market system, free of onerous regulation, and one that promotes personal responsibility and accountability would be far more desirable.

Recent Expansions of Eligibility for Medicaid

Many of us are frustrated with the continued expansion of Medicaid recipients. This memorandum details what bills caused the expansion and the estimated caseload impact. Check the tables at the end of the report for specifics.

The fiscal year 2009-10 budget shows over 287 state employees administering the Medicaid program and over 476,000 Medicaid recipients. Is it any wonder why legislators must allocated increasing amounts to Medicaid?.

More dependency by citizens on government programs may have short-term benefit which in the long-term leads to serfdom.

CO Attorney General's Final Remarks on Obama-Care

Anesthesia Recommended for Organ Donors thought to be Dead
For a long time, anesthetists have debated whether people certified as "brain dead" might experience pain during surgery to remove donated organs, done while their hearts are still beating. Without sedation, such operations can bring troubling sights. "Nurses get really, really upset. You stick the knife in and the pulse and blood pressure shoot up. If you don't give anything at all, the patient will start moving and wriggling around and it's impossible to do the operation."

Health Care op-ed
The Colorado Health Care Reform Commission, and a significant number of Colorado officials, want to eliminate uninsured residents by legislating them away. Their goal: start by insuring all Colorado children.
