Marriage, Family and Sexuality

Good government generally begins in the family, and if the moral character of a people once degenerate, their political character must soon follow. -- Elias Boudinot, 1783 President of the Continental Congress and later US Congressman from New Jersey

FAMILY
The protection and preservation of families is of the utmost importance to our country. The family has always been a paramount issue, for the well being of society hinges upon the strength and stability of the families that make it up. Families bear the primary burden to bring up children with a proper understanding of morals and ethics for society. Sufficient research has been conducted revealing the strong ties between broken households and moral failure in children as they approach and enter adulthood. Divorce has broken not just the marriages of our state but it has also deeply wounded our children. If we cannot trust the stability of our own homes and communities then how can we assume that we should trust our government.

MARRIAGE
The families of the state of Colorado must be protected and defended from the liberalizing of marriage. If families are to be strong, they will be strong because of the marriages that drive them. If they are to be weak, it will be because the marriages are broken and failing. Marriage must not be redefined but rather re-emphasized. Our state must not lose its understanding of the significance of the purpose of marriage. (See policy position on Homosexuality)

[AN ASIDE]
The reason society must fight for strong, traditional marriages and families is because certain segments of our society strive to redefine the very understanding of family and proper sexuality in an attempt to validate their lifestyle and redefine the age-old definition of morality. Those views jeopardize society by breaking with the natural design of humanity. Government exists to ensure the well-being of society.

SEXUALITY
Human sexuality is an issue of morality and a key element of society, which mandates its defense by the government to ensure the longevity of society. If government tolerates any type of sexual behavior, then it will cease to defend proper and necessary sexual behavior. Homosexuality and adultery cause detrimental effects to the stability of families and the social responsibility of the children and are therefore harmful to society. Procreation can only happen heterosexually and therefore necessitates heterosexual intercourse. As stated in my policy position on Homosexuality, procreation is in the best interest of the state and the state relies on marriage for the continuation not just of the population but also for social stability. When appropriate sexuality is redefined to encompass any form of human sexuality, the government ceases to protect the most important interest of society (healthy survival) and places our society at risk.

Homosexual Marriage and One Holy Catholic Church
The Vatican's strong pronouncement that, after 6,000 years of civilized history, marriage is still between only one man and one woman, drew predictable fire from some rather unpredictable places in Colorado. State politicians joined liberals of all kinds in telling the Vatican to "stop telling us how to vote".

8/11/03 - Maggie Gallagher: What Marriage is For
GAY MARRIAGE is no longer a theoretical issue. Canada has it. Massachusetts is expected to get it any day. The Goodridge decision there could set off a legal, political, and cultural battle in the courts of 50 states and in the U.S. Congress. Every politician, every judge, every citizen has to decide: Does same-sex marriage matter? If so, how and why?

4/10/02 - Marriage: The Safest Place for Women and Children

The institution that most strongly protects mothers and children from domestic abuse and violent crime is marriage.
